Professor Adam Nelson has recently visited Titus Salt School in Saltaire, Bradford, and Outwood Grange Academy in Wakefield. At both schools, Prof Nelson got the opportunity to talk to sixth-form Chemistry A-level students about some of the challenges associated with discovering new medicines for targets such as protein-protein interactions (PPIs). Addressing such challenges could translate into potential treatments for major societal disease. Two members of the PoPPI team were recently involved in public engagement activities, when they spoke at the Leeds Pint of Science events. Andy Wilson spoke to the general public about protein-protein interactions and their role in cancer at Chem-Mystery of Life. Kris Paraschiv spoke about the relationship of protein-protein interactions to skin-care products at the Skin-Care event. Dek Woolfson has recently presented to and interacted with pupils at Downside School, Bath, on the topic “Synthetic proteins for synthetic biology”. 

Members of the PoPPI team were recently filmed for an introductory video, which will appear on this website soon. Filming took place at both Bristol and Leeds Universities over a two day period, with most members of the project involved. The final video will feature a combination of interviews, animation and demonstrations. On 23 November, Dek Woolfson chaired a public debate ‘Altering plants, microbes and people’ at The Watershed, Bristol.  Members of the public were invited to join researchers from BrisSynBio to discuss the emerging discipline of synthetic biology and how it may be applied to a range of sectors, from using microorganisms as factories for food and fuel, smart therapeutics, improved crops and even altered humans.
